Samsung Rides Success Wave - While Sony, Sharp, and Panasonic See Downturn
While Sony, Sharp, and Panasoniclanguish with losses, attributed in large measure to weaker TV sales, Samsung is doing just fine, with TV sales better than ever - and you can't overlook its very successful Android phone product line. With that in mind, the Korea-based consumer electronics giant is planning on further firming up its TV market share by getting more TV products out at lower price points, where there is growing demand. However, Samsung is also pushing ahead with advancing Smart TV technology. For more details, read the reports from Reutersand The Verge.

Apple iTV Prototype May Be In The Hands of Canadian Cable TV Providers
It seems that Best Buy isn't the only one that is preparing us for the upcoming Apple entry into the LCD TV market. Reports are now circulating that a Canadian cable TV operator(s) is(are) now testing an actual prototype of the 42-inch Apple powered set.

Although details are not being confirmed (or denied) by any of those supposedly directly involved, some claims regarding the forthcoming set include the incorporation of both gesture and Siri voice control, keyboard plug-in control option, and access to many of the apps that are now used on iPadsand iPhones- and will also be able to interact directly with those devices.

Keeping in mind that nothing is final until the product is actually unveiled to the public, check out some of the speculative details so far in the reports from The Daily Mail, The Register, and The Globe and Mail.

Frankly, regardless of its Apple Smart TV-likefunctions, once this TV does come to market, those of us that report and review TV and home theater products will also want see how the TV performs with regards to its core image display and video processing capabilities, as well as its physical connectivity with other home theater components.

Home Theater Term of the Week: DVD Region Code
Region Codes are a DVD coding system enforced by the movie industry that is intended to preserve movie distribution rights and agreements.

Movies are released in theaters in different parts of the world at different times. That Summer blockbuster in the U.S. may end up being the Christmas blockbuster overseas. If that occurs, the DVD version of the movie may be out in the U.S. while it is still showing in theaters overseas.

DVD players and DVDs are labeled for operation on within a specific geographical region in the world. For all the details, read my entire glossary entry for the term: DVD Region Code.
